how to (be) tame(d) (by) a novice (SN PVP Guide)

Recommended Posts

Have fun playing this class, hopefully

Here are a number of reasons to choose SN for PVP:
1. Sprite
2. Novice Shield/Anti-Magic
3. To annoy people (once you've mastered it)
4. Become an underdog
5. Mini-AB
6. Potentially hybrid
7. Self-hatred

As an SN, you can become one of the three, or all of them: offense, support, utility--all either fully physical, magical, or both.
Legend: Recommended, Standard/Switch Gear

Build #1: Full Magic, standard VIT

STR 150+ (for weight)
AGI 195 ASPD+12 (against AGI Down and Quagmire)
VIT 50~ Soft DEF
INT 500
DEX 190~ (instant cast)
LUK 25/40 PD

Top:   +9 35% Redux - Fused Pharaoh
          Stormy Headphones - Kiel-D-01
          Dark Lord Mask - Kiel-D-01
+9 Noble Hat - Fused Pharaoh
+9 Glacius Crown - Fused Pharaoh
35% redux hat for obvious reasons. Stormy and DL for SG and MS, respectively. Noble every time you are going to spam heal either solely for recovery or attempting to outheal DPS.

Middle: 45% Delay Wing - Glorified Orc Hero
Ancient Samurai Blades - Glorified Orc Hero
Magic Rare - Glorified Orc Hero
Your source of ACDR and magic damage (if you opt for the latter two).

Bottom: Music Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Grim Reaper Spirit - Kiel-D-01
               Saint Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Blessings of Porings - Kiel-D-01
               Heart Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Poring Ring - Kiel-D-01
MR for anti-silence+freeze. GRS for anti-curse+stonecurse. SR for def reduction. BoP for basic element resist. HR for anti-stone+kyrie. PR for anti-strip. Have fun with auras as much as you want.

Armor: +8 Juggernaut Armor
+8 Magnetite Body Armor - Tao Gunka
Any unbreakable armor - Fused Ghostring, Detardeurus, Naght Sieger
              Spiritual Tunic (lots of them)
+10 Wind Property Armor (Aebecee) - Frus/Tao Gunka
SN's base HP is somewhat low. Juggernaut/Tao Gunka will help mitigate this weakness. A +8 Magnetite Body Armor will help if you need anti-knockback in specific arenas. Fused Ghostring to protect yourself against forced neutral offense (Sacrifice, Asura Strike, Acid Demonstration). Spiritual Tunic because resist. A Wind property armor for some good basic resistances with a slot. Detardeurus if ever you need LP against magic. Using SS while on Naght Sieger does deal quite a punch.

Weapon: Neophyte - Celine Kimi, Zakudam, Zakudam, Evil Imbued Box/Corruption Root or Graceful Margaretha, Graceful Margaretha, Zakudam, Zakudam
Wyrmtooth - Corruption Root, Mastersmith, Metaling/Lord of Death, Randgris
Celine Kimi+2zakudam is pretty much standard for magic damage. Don't waste that last slot on some small damage bonus card (Graceful Margaretha, Entweihen Crothen). Better use something defensive to protect yourself. Know how to pick targets properly (e.g. don't bother attacking a geared AB). Switch to Wyrmtooth if you're going full-defense mode.

Shield: +8 Novice Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
             +8 Libra Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
             +8 Obelisk Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
Novice Shield - Golden Thief Bug
Novice Shield for that massive 20% flat resistance against all elements except Neutral. +8Libra/Obelisk for anti-strip and various bonuses (anti-knockback, long-range reflect, respectively). An extra Novice Shield with GTB if you're solo-ing against a full-magic target. Combine it with DH/GC to make the most out of it.

Garment: Asprika
One of SNs' advantages over other classes is their flat elemental resistance. Better abuse it with Asprika. Why would an SN bother with SinX/Keepers' Muffler when he/she has Hiding+Stalk?

Footgear: Sleipnir of the Gods - Fallen Bishop/Determined Kathryne
+8 Poseidon Shoes - Determined Kathryne
+8 Howling Wind - Determined Kathryne
Some people like Howling. Your choice; I wouldn't use it if you ask me. Nothing like auto-casting LoV to make your enemies flinch and spam faster.

Accessories: Specialist Glove (Super Novice) - Faceworm/Scaraba/Gem of Super Novice/Gem of Ignorance/Gem of Lightning/Siroma
                        Copper Rosary - Dark Faceworm/Scaraba/Elvira/Siroma
                        Artifact of Trial (5%MATK, 6%ACDR) - Dark Faceworm/Scaraba/Elvira/Siroma
There isn't really a standard set for an SN. You could even use Evil Gloves if you want to. Using Specialist Glove+Fused Pharaoh also removes 100% of your SP consumption. You could ignore Pressure spam and Soul Burn.

Build #2: Full Physical/ standard VIT

STR 500
AGI 195 ASPD+12 (against AGI Down and Quagmire)
VIT 50~ Soft DEF
INT 80/350 (Amon Ra)
DEX 300 (HIT)
LUK 20/25/40 PD

Top:  35% Redux - Gemini-S58
          Pokemon Master Cap - Gemini-S58
          Stormy Headphones - Kiel-D-01
          Freeza Hat - Gemini-S58
          Noble Hat - Kiel-D-01
          Glacius Crown - Gemini-S58
35% redux hat for obvious reasons. Stormy for SG. Noble every time you are going to spam heal either solely for recovery or attempting to outheal DPS. Freeza for endowing with Ghost. Glacius Crown when dueling magic-users.

Middle: Cloak of Azure - Glorified Orc Hero/Dark Snake Lord
Great Butterfly Wings - Glorified Orc Hero/Dark Snake Lord
Eden's Judgement - Glorified Orc Hero/Dark Snake Lord
Harpy Wings - Glorified Orc Hero/Dark Snake Lord
Your source of physical damage. I choose Cloak of Azure because SN really lacks the capability to deal massive amounts of physical damage. Use EJ if you really want more catching power. Harpy Wings against strip.

Bottom: Music Ring - Gemini-S58
               Saint Ring - Gemini-S58
               Blessings of Porings - Gemini-S58
               Bee Ring - Gemini-S58
MR for anti-silence+freeze. SR for def reduction. BoP for basic element resist. Bee Ring for some damage and PD.

Armor: +8 Juggernaut Armor
+8 Magnetite Body Armor - Tao Gunka
+8 Keeper's Armor/Exile Armor - Fused Ghostring, Detardeurus, Naght Sieger
Use armors with 50% stun resist if you use DSL instead of GOHC.

Weapon: +10 Wyrmtooth (BB) - Memory of Thanatos/Sword Guardian/Sword Guardian/Randgris
                 +10 Wyrmtooth (BB) - Incantation Samurai/Sword Guardian/Sword Guardian/Randgris
                 +10 Wyrmtooth (SB) - Fused Atroce/Incantation Samurai/White Knight/Randgris
                 +10 Wyrmtooth (SB) - Memory of Thanatos/Fused Atroce/White Knight/Randgris
You need to be Lv 4 to use BB. I know, right?

Footgear: Sleipnir of the Gods - Amon Ra/Fused Eddga
                  +8 Poseidon Shoes - Amon Ra/Fused Eddga
                   Supersonic Shoes
Some people like Howling. Your choice; I wouldn't use it if you ask me. Nothing like auto-casting LoV to make your enemies flinch and spam faster. Supersonic Shoes if you want a different source of 50% stun resist.

Accessories: Copper Rosary - Gem of Sonic Blow/Gem of Safety/Gem of Pneuma/Ifrit
Artifact of Trial (5%ATK, Immune Lv 1) - Ifrit/Gem of Marksmanship/Gem of Safety/Gem of Pneuma
There isn't really a standard set for an SN. You could even use Evil Gloves if you want to.

Build #3: Hybrid Physical+Magical, low VIT

STR 430+
AGI 195 ASPD+12 (against AGI Down and Quagmire)
VIT 1
INT 500
DEX 200~ (instant cast+HIT; you have Attention Concentrate and Blessing)
LUK 20-25 PD

Top:  +9 35% Redux - Fused Pharaoh
          Stormy Headphones - Kiel-D-01
          Dark Lord Mask - Kiel-D-01
+9 Noble Hat - Fused Pharaoh
          Pokemon Master Cap - Kiel-D-01
+9 Glacius Crown - Fused Pharaoh
35% redux hat for obvious reasons. Stormy and DL for SG and MS, respectively. Noble every time you are going to spam heal either solely for recovery or attempting to outheal DPS. Pokemon Master Cap for Auto Sonic Blow. Bowling Bash damage is already weak enough; playing it on less than 450 STR will make it even worse. Welcome to the world of hybrids.

Middle: 45% Delay Wing - Glorified Orc Hero
Ancient Samurai Blades - Glorified Orc Hero
Swords of Divinity - Glorified Orc Hero
Magic Rare - Glorified Orc Hero
Melee Rare - Glorified Orc Hero
Your source of ACDR and magic+physical damage.

Bottom: Music Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Grim Reaper Spirit - Kiel-D-01
               Saint Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Blessings of Porings - Kiel-D-01
               Heart Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Poring Ring - Kiel-D-01
               Bee Ring - Kiel-D-01
               ??? - Permeter
MR for anti-silence+freeze. GRS for anti-curse+stonecurse. SR for def reduction. BoP for basic element resist. HR for anti-stone+kyrie. PR for anti-strip. Bee Ring for damage+PD. Have fun with auras as much as you want. You can opt for an aura slotted with Permeter if you know you are facing someone using Shadow property attacks.

Armor: +8 Juggernaut Armor
+8 Magnetite Body Armor - Spirit Decorated Tree
Any unbreakable armor - Fused Ghostring, Detardeurus, Naght Sieger
             Spiritual Tunic (lots of them)
+10 Wind Property Armor (Aebecee) - Frus/Tao Gunka

A Wind property armor for some good basic resistances with a slot. Detardeurus if ever you need LP against magic. Using SS while on Naght Sieger does deal quite a punch. On low VIT builds, raw HP bonuses usually give more HP than HP% bonuses. Experiment with which combos give you the most HP.

Weapon: Neophyte - Celine Kimi, Zakudam, Zakudam, Evil Imbued Box/Corruption Root OR Graceful Margaretha, Graceful Margaretha, Zakudam, Zakudam
+10 Wyrmtooth - Memory of Thanatos, White Knight, Fused Atroce, Randgris
Celine Kimi+2zakudam is pretty much standard for magic damage. Don't waste that last slot on some small damage bonus card (Graceful Margaretha, Entweihen Crothen). Better use something defensive to protect yourself. Know how to pick targets properly (e.g. don't bother attacking a geared AB). Switch to Wyrmtooth if you're going full-defense mode. Use Thanatos so you can target low VIT with magic, and high VIT with physical.

Shield: +8 Novice Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
             +8 Libra Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
             +8 Obelisk Shield - Hades/Thara Frog
Novice Shield - Golden Thief Bug
Novice Shield for that massive 20% flat resistance against all elements except Neutral. +8Libra/Obelisk for anti-strip and various bonuses (anti-knockback, long-range reflect, respectively). An extra Novice Shield with GTB if you're solo-ing against a full-magic target. Combine it with DH/GC to make the most out of it.

Accessories: Specialist Glove (Super Novice) Faceworm/Scaraba/Gem of Super Novice/Gem of Ignorance/Gem of Lightning/Siroma
Faceworm+Dark Faceworm set is very strong on this build with its ATK+MATK bonuses, Lex Aeterna procs, and raw HP.

Notes:

1. Your goal in low VIT builds is to have almost the same HP as you would in other builds with standard VIT, except you barely have VIT on your character. Usually a very expensive build; I myself play it with TGK scrolls so I would have around 2m HP with barely any soft DEF.

2. For bursting purposes, you can opt for a NYDc-slotted armor (preferably a wind property armor for its elemental resistances) to maximize bolt damage. Gioia is also an option given that you are able to switch and defend yourself properly when the need arises, as well as if you choose Lightning Bolt as your main DPS skill. *credits to moumantai

3. Build #3 is barely plausible after the long-awaited auto-SB nerf. Don't get me wrong, I am in cloud nine after seeing that hat get nerfed, but BB (especially for SN) remains significantly weak.

Final note: Super Novices can equip Elemental Swords. Cast Cold Bolt to proc its chain. It can be interchangeable with builds utilizing Neophyte for magic damage (cast Double Cast then switch to Elemental Sword to attack). Your downside will be 3 weapon card slots and non-existent base WeaponMATK. Also, swords break.

*Guide complete, but always subject to changes. SN is a very niche class that works very well on the right hands, and there will always be new builds around. I'll share them if I believe they are worth using in the current meta (e.g. spike builds).

wind armor w/ nydc also good option to have to burst ppl while counter maya at same time

also optional to combo w/ gioia but need to switch fast (n mostly use under pneuma only).
